Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:  

Oversees day to day activities of one or more functions within a hospital's business office. Responsible for admitting and registration, patient billing and collection, third-party payer relations, and/or preparation of insurance claims. Ensures activities comply with hospital standards and government regulations. May also be responsible for the patient admitting function. Generates budgets, financial statements, and various reports. Prefers a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to the Chief Financial Officer. Manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Extensive knowledge of department processes.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS of this job description include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for managing all aspects of the hospital's accounts receivables 
  • Reviews insurance contracts to assure accurate contractual reimbursement and collections and adherence to Business Office policies and procedures
  • Maintains good working knowledge of insurance reimbursements and updates Business Office personnel
  • Works with revenue cycle team to ensure clean, accurate and timing billing of claims
  • Reviews all business procedures and recommends adjustments to Chief Financial Officer on an as needed basis and as required by regulatory standards 
  • Office works with accounting to reconcile cash posted to AR 
  • Prepares monthly financial and management reports, including aging of receivables and unbilled analyses 
  • Responsible for staff adherence to all Business Office Policies and Procedures
  • Conducts periodic performance reviews on all Business Office Staff
  • Monitors work load and personnel needs of Business Office 
  • Trains, develops and motivates Business Office Staff
  • Assumes any other responsibilities that may be assigned by the Chief Financial Officer on an as needed basis 
  • Ensures on a daily basis that patients and their relatives are dealt with in a professional and courteous manner by the Business Office personnel
  • Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following, and enforcing standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
  • Maintains strictest confidentiality; adheres to all HIPAA guidelines/regulations.
  • Performs other tasks and duties as assigned in an efficient, effective and cost conscious manner, complying with all hospital policies, procedures, and regulations.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, QUALIFICATION and EDUCATIONAL AND /OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Previous business office & medical billing experience including knowledge of billing related reporting; Typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 to 3 years supervisory experience be required.
  • Experience working with medical payers including Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance
  • Working knowledge of medical billing systems 
  • Working knowledge of CPT and ICD-9 & ICD-10 coding systems; Coding certification preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare, Business, or related Degree/experience preferred
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORKING CONDITIONS:
Sitting, standing, walking bending/twisting, kneeling/squatting, reaching, climbing and should be able to lift 25 or more pounds using proper lifting techniques.  Rapidly changing and stressful environment.  Ability to communicate with various levels of people.  Possible exposure to communicable and infectious disease and hazardous materials. Occasional exposure to unpleasant patient or unit elements (accidents, injuries and illness).  Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances.  Subject to varying and unpredictable situations.  Handles emergency or crisis situations.  Subject to many interruptions.  Occasional pressure due to multiple tasks and inquiries.
