Histoy Of Candler County and Metter Georgia
Candler County is Gerogia's 150th county. It was formed on the 14th of July 1914 as a result of growing pressure to create more new counties. It was named for the late governor Allen D. Candler who died four years before it was formed. It is one of only twentyfive counties to retain their origional boundries.
Metter was named as the county seat of Candler County. The origin of the name is unknown although local folklore says it was named by a railroal official who explained that he met his wife at the train station, and "met her" became Metter. Historical sites surround Metter, which surrounds the local court house. It's small town charm is what attracts people here.
